REVIEW :
Galerie Olivier Robert is pleased to present a solo show by Caribbean artist Bruno Pédurand, as the first installment of the exhibition project 3X3 *.
The approach underlining the body of work Amnesia plays on the archaeology of the mind. By reactivating elements inherent to social practices and actions such as playing in the installation " Father Labat’s children" or religion in the installation " The inheritance of Cham ", Bruno Pédurand appeals to collective memory.
" The children of Father Labat ", a work made up of a hundred baby doll heads in painted plaster and surmounted each with a flag of an African country, hints at the African Diasporas largely at the origin of the populations of the New World. Father Labat, XVIIth century missionary, landowner, engineer and writer played a determining role in the history of the French colonies. At the origin of the most violent campaigns of destruction of liturgical objects brought back by the African slaves to the islands, but also as the inventor of a brandy, which became the very profitable rum, Father Labat is an ambivalent character.

In " The inheritance of Cham ", images work as a material with plastic qualities and symbolic content, a link between reality and the invisible domain of religion, philosophy and magic. They serve as raw materials to manipulations that evoke rituals. For instance, the burnt words of the Black Code in the wooden panels: Under the effect of the fire, colors and signs are darkened, modified, distorted little by little. The flame intervenes as tool, and reduces the images to the state of simple signs. The combustion works as the sublimation in the act of creation of new images. These arise from the ashes of those who generated them. It can be, the metaphor of the process that led to the emergence of the West Indian companies.
